Being Real

I thought I would start another boring web site about my products and what I have learned by making them. I will do just that, but I never considered added my personal growth as part of sharing my message. Trying something completely unknown can be to the crafter a journey of personal discovery and healing.

I am to be 50. I have absolutely no idea what I am doing with this blog, but I need to express what I have kept to myself for so long.

I am gonna take a shot at being me.

So, as I dive into skin care in general, I think I should start off with just one product. I do not think I will make it rich, but I will share my gift anyway. What I have to offer is just that good.

Meeting People

Today I met a lovely family.  These people were well educated. I am proud to say that I wasn’t terribly shy in telling the family about my skin care.  Lately, I find myself talking more about my skin and haircare collection.

I have finally formulated my products.  I need to polish them just a tad in order to sell them.   I am very proud of my achievement.  I didn’t start with the idea of selling wares to anyone, however,  what I have developed overtime is so good I need to share it. In the spirit of moment, I am announcing that  I am gonna make it and share what I have learned over the years to make it on this blog.

I don’t really think I will make it big, but knowing my products will help others is awesome.  I am so passionate about skincare that I truly wanna expand what I make and continue to get feedback on how my products have helped.

To the family I met today, if you are really reading this, thank you for listening.

What Makes Us Stink?

Ok, I am tired and need to sleep for work tomorrow morning.  I opted for a quiet quiet activity while my honey sleeps.

Staphylococcus hominis is the bacteria that makes our underarms stink.   The stench doesn’t happen until the these bacteria digest our odorless sweat.

So, I guess I want to know what things in natural deodorant take care of that nasty beast.

s

What on earth are we doing to ourselves??!!

Did you know Green River, WY is the “Trona Capital”of the world?  It’s where all of America’s baking soda comes from and it supplies 15% of the global need for baking soda!!!  Who knew?  I didn’t!!!!!

Trona is a sodium carbonate compound that is processed into baking soda ash or bicarbonate of soda.

Now, I promised I wouldn’t do another article on what harmful things are in our everyday products.  I promised I would talk about why we should deviate from what we have been brain washed into thinking as our only choices are for hygiene.

I began to wonder why ancient history had not mentioned anything about deodorant.  Apparently baking soda was used in Egyptian times dating as far back as 3500 B.C.  They used it as part of the mummification process.  As time progressed, baking soda use is noted through out history with multiple applications from glass making to cleaning, even medicine.

In the 1900’s baking soda was proven to save lives during the flu epidemic.  If a patient could be alkalized with enough baking soda quickly chances of survival increased profoundly.  When infection runs rampant in a body without antibiotics to kill the germ; the chemistry of the body is thrown off balance due to lactic acid. As the acid levels rise due to end products of germ growth, the body systems begin to shut down and ultimately die. Tell me God wasn’t at work when man figured out that chestnut !!!!

So why wasn’t deodorant been mentioned until the past 150 years???  Antonie van Leeuwenhoek is likely to have viewed the first microscopic life form in 1674.  As study of bacteria evolved,  brilliant scientific minds continued to learn.  Finally, the year is 1833.  Czech physiologist Johannes Purkinje (1787-1869) discovers sweat glands.  Eventually, two and two were put together; and the world finally understood why arm pits stink. However, humans would have to wait until 1888 for the first commercially produced deodorant called Mum. This deodorant used zinc oxide to kill the bacteria that proliferated in pits everywhere!!!

Until as recently as the last 10-30 years of the 20th century, the antibacterial properties of baking soda had not been investigated.  So I guess I can stop wondering why deodorant hasn’t been around since the beginning of recorded time and why we as a culture would put stuff on us that is toxic.   WE DIDN’T KNOW BETTER!!!!  Living is better with science, but not all things science has to offer is always  best.   Hence, the classics are around for a reason and natural goodness available to us all.

So now there is coconut oil,  Baking soda, cornstarch or arrow root powder and shea butter in the most basic recipes of natural deodorant.  I did try it, however once again the baking soda dried my underarms leaving them red and sore.  IF you don’t have sensitive skin, you can use this recipe.

3 TBSP Shea Butter, 3 TBSP Arrow Root Powder, 2 TBSP Baking Soda, and 2 TBSP Coconut Oil.

1)  Melt the Shea Butter and Coconut oil in a covered microwaveable bowl for 10-20 seconds at a time until melted.  Use mitts or potholders to remove the bowl from the microwave to prevent being burned.  Of course!

2)  Place the bowl on a heat safe surface and mix the Baking Soda and Arrow Root Powder into the melted oil.  Add whatever essential oils you might like or none at all, your choice.

3)  IF you don’t have or want Shea Butter you can use nothing but Coconut Oil, but I am afraid that it would be greasy and stain clothes.  Shea butter adds a solidifying component to the recipe.  I also recommend Arrow Root Powder over Corn Starch  simply because I read somewhere ONCE that its use can lead to yeast infections.   I prefer Arrow Root Powder because Europeans have been using it as baby powder for eons.  I conclude that because its been used for so long, side effects if any would be noted by now.   I submit that Arrow Root Powder is another tried and true classic.

SOMETHING TO NOTE!  A clay detox mask for the underarm is recommended to remove impurities, cleanse and remove built up bacteria.  Commercial chemical laden deodorants block the bodies natural ability to sweat.  There will be a natural deodorant adjustment period so the clay will speed this process along quickly and extend the potency of natural deodorant while you are detoxing.  While you’re at it, slather some of it on you face and reap the rewards.  The armpit detox mask is extremely refreshing.  My underarms felt very clean every night that I used it.  There are several recipes to choose from but this is the one I chose and had great success with it.

Arm Pit Detox Mask, the Stinky Pit Remedy

1) 1 TBSP Bentonite Clay

2) 1 Tsp Apple Cider Vinegar.  I used Rose Water first, but vinegar is easier to find and I found I liked it just as much if not more than using Rose Water in this detox mask.

3) 1-2 Tsp of non-alcoholic Witch Hazel.  Mine was alcoholic.  I never knew.  I will have to try non-alcoholic next time.  I liked my alcoholic Witch Hazel just fine.  I would welcome any commentary on noted differences.

4) 2 drops of Rosemary.  I felt super stinky so I added quite a bit!!  LOL.  I also love the smell of rosemary.

5) 2 drops Helichrysum Oil.  I only added what the recipe called for because Helichrysum Oil can be expensive.

Apply this mixture to your pungent pits every night for 10-20 minutes for 2-3 weeks.  I did mine for a week and a half.  I am stink free.  It is recommended that this be done every six months.

Ruben and I have been using natural deodorant for two years.  He never needed an armpit detox, but my lack of activity, diet and age my have made it more of a necessity for me.  After I did do a detox, my satisfaction with natural deodorant has been undeniable. We have tried several different recipes.  We finally feel we have found one we both like and would share with our families.

In my next article I will share a more complex recipe that is readily poured into reused or new deodorant stick containers.  We love it and have saved money while being good to ourselves and the mother of us all.

Thou Shalt Not Stink!

Hi there!  I have been busy and haven’t had the time to blog.  I start a new job on Monday and will try to post something at least once a week.

I wanted to say that I am happy that my wonderful Aunt Betty came to my site and read my posts.  I was afraid to share the fact that I opened my own blog.  It’s true, I have found the majority of my information on Pinterest.  Embarrassing and cliche as it may be to admit I have been inducted into the fold of sheep, I do look for something beyond simple. Ever since I experienced healing with over the counter essential oils and staples for a severe case of eczema, I am forever changed!  Now, I seek archaically defined elegance in the sense of simple, real and undeniable results.

So now to the second topic I pondered after homemade eczema salve, deodorant!  I was needing a deodorant fast and found the most simple, recipe quick due to low funds and late hours.  Pinterest to the rescue!!!!!

I was getting ready to go out on a travel assignment and I had everything in my wonderful kitchen.

Very Little Money Deodorant:  Emergency Deodorant!!!!!!!

3 Tablespoons Baking Soda

3 Tablespoons Cornstarch (if you have it use Arrow Root Powder instead)

5 drops of Tea Tree Oil

If you have Bay Leaves for cooking and a coffee grinder or a Ninja, you have the option of using 2 Bay Leaves.

1.  Combine all of your ingredients in a bowl minus Bay Leaves if you have no mechanical grinder. (A mortar and passel might work.  I tried it for a few minutes and gave up.  The leaves were tough and fibrous.  I didn’t have time to play)

2. Place in container of choice.

3.  Apply with a brush or hand dust it on.

If you have a coffee grinder put the leaves in it and grind them.  Add them to your assembled ingredients.

If you have a Ninja or food processor, place all of your ingredients in it and whirl away.    When you think its mixed enough, wait for the dust to settle!!!  Put it in your container of choice.   Apply as able.

Voila!!!!!!

Time:  Less than 5 minutes.

Cost:  Less than 20 cents.

Caution:  Baking soda is very drying!!   I found this out first hand.  It can leave you with red, dry and irritated underarms for many who use so much for more than a couple days.

In my next post, I want to tell you why these ingredients correctly formulated are an amazing break-thru from commercial products!  Down with the man! (I am laughing my butt off as I write this last part.  I love it!!!)  Forget another article on all the harmful ingredients we have been brain washed to use as our only option for underarm hygiene!!! Lets learn what is so wonderful about these simple, earth loving ingredients and spread the incredibly elegant truth!!!

My Awakening

I was married to an alcoholic for 13 years.  During that time, as the disease grew, I worried about paying the bills.  One day I bought a used deep freeze and that began to  change my life.  I began to learn ways of buying food cheap and how to store it.  My mind began to remember my survival roots and how to live off the land.  I began to ponder self sustainability as I never had before.

I had a plot of 2.5 acres in the country.  Multiple topics of sustainability had become common conversation after the housing market crash of, I think, 2009.  People were struggling to survive and talk about living more simply abounded.  Struggling in my own way,  I began to study more and more about making things on my own cheaply.

After the marriage was over, I came down with eczema to my lower right leg.  After several rounds of the strongest prescription cortisone creams, my leg had not healed.  I would wake in the middle of the night scratching my self to the point of bleeding.  Working in the healthcare environment, I began to worry that I would catch a terrible microbe.  After all, I had seen patients lose limbs and life due to antibiotic resistant organisms.

A friend of mine showed me a line of high quality essential oils.  I had used all of the Lavender in my kit.   In desperation, I decided to open the frankincense.  I knew it had some antibacterial properties and nothing more.  To my amazement the redness faded and so did the discomfort.  It was only temporary, but it darn sure got my attention.  I knew I needed more ingredients instantly.  I went to the web and looked up everything I could find on healing eczema with essential oils.

In two weeks, my eczema was gone!  I was healed with nothing prescription!!!   I began to question everything I used and the money it cost.  I healed myself with $120.00 of stuff I had access to at any time.   I was done with better living thru science.  I decided the ancient methods had survived to our life time for a far better reason than I conceived.

First blog post

I have started this site to share the incredible knowledge that is available on the internet.  I am a registered nurse of 16 years.  I value western medicine.  However, as the holistic side of medicine is becoming more accepted by the public, I wanna put my two cents out there.   I want to be a part of the movement that educates and learns how to get care straight from our mother.  My hope is that this movement will encourage more green home spun industries to love ourselves and earth.
